Visiting Central Portugal for a Holiday

by Howie Fisher

Portugal entices the visitor with snow-capped mountains and beautiful green pine and eucalyptus forests in the North and Central areas, to stunning cliff-lined beaches in the South. Repeatedly, Central Portugal is named the “Green Heart” of Portugal, because of is beautiful covering of eucalyptus and pine trees that spread over its valleys and mountains. Central Portugal is an area of stunning natural beauty. Central Portugal is a place where visitors are unable to not see its outstanding natural beauty.

In order to travel around in comfort it is advisable to do so by car, due to the beauty of rural Central Portugal and the beaches of the Silver Coast can be experienced fully. Winding through Central Portugal are natural features, including forests, mountains and rivers. Complementing them are adventure pursuits, for example, kayaking, mountaineering, hiking, mountain-biking or (for a slower pace) fishing. Numerous river beaches abound in Central Portugal, offering restaurants, bars, water sports and pedal boats. They are ideal for those who do not want to travel to the coast. There are more places and attractions to experience in Central Portugal, namely the Montebello Golf and Spa Resort, or a jaunt to the historic university city of Coimbra .

From 1139 to 1260, Coimbra, Central Portugal’s main city was the country’s capital. Above the city, positioned at the top of a hill is one of Central Portugal’s main tourist draws, the University of Coimbra. It is the main seat of learning in Portugal. A wonderful Baroque Chapel is in the University; a Library which boasts over 300,000 historical books and delicately decorated ceilings; and some of the most fabulous gardens in Europe are here, of note are the 18th century Botanical gardens.

Coimbra was a major area of the Aeminium in Roman times. There is still an aqueduct and cryptoporticus remaining from that time. Close by is the ancient city of Conimbriga which possesses some of the best preserved Roman ruins in Europe. There are also some good museums in Coimbra, celebrating other periods than the Roman era. There is the Museo Nacional Machado de Castro, seen as the most key in Portugal and the City Museum.

Slithering along Central Portugal like a snake is the impressive River Mondego. It journeys through the mountains, towns and villages and is at its most best as it makes its way through the city of Coimbra. Enjoyment of the Mondego can be by simply sitting and taking in its energy on the banks, by ferry ride, kayaking, or sipping a glass of wine at a bankside bar.

The typical Portuguese nature of being welcoming, hospitable and friendly is prevalent in Central Portugal. Initially the language seems challenging and tricky. However, by mastering a few of the key words and phrases and trying them out on the locals, a reward of homemade wine or port is oftentimes the case.

The Portuguese people have a long history of being migrant workers with an average of 30% of the country’s native populace being abroad working at any one occasion. Almost every individual living in Portugal has a close family member working somewhere abroad, which leads to a very accepting attitude to foreigners visiting, living and working in Portugal.

Central Portugal offers a huge mixture of places to see and experiences to be had. It is a place of spectacular natural beauty steeped in history, custom and culture. The area is imbued in tradition, culture and history and is also a place of outstanding natural beauty.

It is the 8th largest city in the UK and is the informal capital of the West Country of England. In 1155 it got the Royal Charter and it was granted county status in 1373 . Following archaeological artefacts dating back to the Paleolithic era, it has been proven that Bristol’s history as a living community dates back approximately 60,000 years.

The city of Bristol was built around the short coastline of the River Severn Estuary and the River Avon. This gave rise to a substantial boating and shipping heritage. In Bristol the main industries were shipbuilding and manufacturing in the thirteenth century. This business diffused to Ireland and Iceland in the fifteenth century and by the sixteenth century, they were further doing business with Spain and the Americas.

Brunel was voted one of the most eminent citizens in Britain’s history in 2002.

1909 saw the formation of the University of Bristol, to be followed in 1992 by the city’s polytechnic becoming the University of the West of England. The latter establishment is now a top centre for media studies and design.

A bid to cripple England’s shipping routes in the south-west was made in the course of World War II by the German Luftwaffe. They heavily bombed the centre of the city. It was an attempt to lame England’s shipping routes in the country’s south-west. The city of Bristol was reconstructed in the 60s. The remodeling had road expansion and tower blocks.

Travel By Train To Save Money On Your Vacation

by Erin Song

If you would like to see the countryside, and you don’t feel up to worrying about gas or new routes, the easiest thing to do is to go by train. Imagine the joy of just stowing away your luggage and relaxing for the rest of the trip. Trains offer snack cars, sleeping cars and dining cars, and they therefore allow you to enjoy your trip without worrying about anything.

Train travel is not as popular as it once was in the United States, but there are train stations in every large city and in many small cities along the way. Today, most people travel by plane and by car. If you decide to travel by train, make sure you plan enough time to get to destination, since trains are a little slower than other forms of transportation. But for those who are looking to enjoy not only reaching their destination, but also the journey, train travel is by far the best.

Major cities including New York, Boston, Washington DC, Chicago, San Francisco, and Dallas all have train stations that operate every day. But, you will be able to find stations in small towns also. Prices for tickets will vary depending on where you want to go and which type of car you want to stay in.

Many Europeans still choose traveling by train as one of the preferred means of transportation, probably because tickets are less expensive. In fact, the Eurorail will take you wherever you want to go for one low price. With a Eurorail pass, you can stop in various countries and see the sights. The wonderful thing about having a pass is that you can continue to use it without wasting time buying any other tickets. You can travel to Spain one day, and then continue your travel to France the next day. This is certainly the preferred way to travel through Europe. You can buy a similar pass called Britrail, to travel through the UK at low cost.

Traveling by train is a way to ensure you will spend less and you will see more. Train trips can last from a few hours to a few days depending on where you are going. If you want to experience something new, or if you want to do a bit more sightseeing while traveling, you should give a train trip a chance. Just be sure you plan for the longer travel. If you are buying a Eurorail pass, be sure to keep a schedule handy, so that you can make the most of the trains available. For those who have never traveled by train before, once you have, you will want to use trains more often.

The Pirates of Penzance, a Great Intro To Light Opera

by Phil Campbell

The Pirates of Penzance is a light comedy opera by Gilbert and Sullivan and the most frequently played of all their plays . On the 31st December 1879, the official premiere was shown in the Fifth Avenue Theatre, New York. It was an instant success. The very first London production was shown at the Opera Comique on the 3rd of April 1880. There have been numerous modernised productions of the play since then, including Joseph Papp’s 1981 production on Broadway.

Within the cast you will find hopelessly good hearted pirates, lovely young maidens and a squad of hopeless but lovable cops. The unlikely plot involves a chain of daft ‘mistakes’ which turn lives completely upside down.

The primary character in the plot is Frederic, who due to a hard of hearing nursemaidnamed Ruth, is a very reluctant apprentice pirate. Frederic is standing on the edge of the shore with the pirates, drinking sherry in celebration of his 21st Birthday when he informs them that he is leaving them. The maid Ruth, explains that when she was Frederic’s former nursemaid she was instructed to set up an apprenticeship with a ships pilot, but because of her poor hearing, thought she heard pirate.

Frederic appeals to the pirate king and his crew to leave too and pursue a more respectable life, however he is not successful. So Frederic puts forward some advice and suggestions on how to achieve a little more success and avoid regularly getting thrashed. He tells them that almost everyone they capture claims to be an orphan because it is common knowledge that as former orphans themselves, the pirates will let them go.

Ruth is determined to wed Frederic and having left the pirates, she manages to convince Frederic that she is very beautiful. Having no other woman to compare her with, Frederic believes her. Ruth’s lie does not last long due to the appearance of some beautiful young maidens. He turns to Ruth saying “You told me you were fair as gold and now I see you’re plain and old.” In complete desperation, Ruth departs. Frederic tries to alert the lovely maidens that there are pirates close by and in no time, Frederic and Mabel, a daughter of the Major General Stanley, promptly.

At this point, Ruth and the pirate king return to inform Frederic that he has not in fact finished his apprenticeship and must return His apprenticeship states that Frederic can only leave once he has reached his 21st birthday, but being born on the 29th of February he only technically has a birthday every leap year. So Frederic must spend another 63 years with the pirates before he can leave ! Frederic feels devastated at this revelation but having a strong sense of duty, he agrees that he will go back and his faithful new love promises she will wait for him!

This Victorian classic is a fantastic introduction to light opera and has successfully stood the test of time. It has remained extremely popular with people for in excess of one hundred and thirty years.

Discover the Mayan city of Tikal

by Frank D. Gardner

History per se is usually never reliable. The actual account we certainly have of history is what remains by opinions. This is especially true in the world of Mayan history, where the a lot of detailed accounts of history are taken from unskilled archaeologists, opinionated historians, wrong translations, one-sided Spanish Conquistador scripts.

Besides such historians, archaeologists and scripts, they only left us with eroding hieroglyphics which cannot always be deciphered, not even by people who speak different Mayan dialects. As a result, the future account, as with every historical account of Mayan history, needs to be read with a bit a constructive and also inquisitive skepticism. The best thing to do is to seek the truth or just something close to it.

More About The Classic Period

The Classic Maya culture were established in the 3 Mesoamerican regions. One of the most vital plus most complete urban developments happened in the lowlands in the “central region” of southern Guatemala. Covered by tropical rainforest, this region is a drainage basin, about 60 miles long and 20 miles wide; the Mayas, basically, are only 1 of 2 peoples to establish a metropolitan culture in a tropical rainforest.

In this region, Tikal was the principal city, nevertheless the spread of urbanization lengthened south to Honduras; the southernmost Mayan city was Copan in northern Honduras. The culture of the Mayans developed less fully in the Guatemalan Highlands and to the north. The highlands are usually more temperate and appear to have been the principal suppliers of raw materials to the central locations. The other primary region of Mayan development was in the Yucatan Peninsula which makes up the eastern as well as the southern portions of modern-day Mexico. This region is in fact a dry region, despite the fact that towns were constructed in this location, which includes Chichen Itza and Uxmal (pronounced “Oosh-mal”), nearly all scholars assume that this was a culturally marginal area. Right after the abandonment of the Classic Mayan urban centers, the Yucatn peninsula turned out to be the major region of a new, synthetic culture referred to as Toltec-Mayan which was established during the time Toltecs migrating from the north integrated with native Maya peoples.

Tikal

The second largest among the ancient Mayan ruined citues of the Mayan civilization is Tikal and it comes second to Calakmul. Situated in El Petn, Guatemala, where regions are recognized by departments instead of states, Tikal recently become among Guatemla’s most desired tourist location. Nearby the cities of Flores as well as Santa Elena Tikal is also among the best conserved Mayan archaeological sites in Latin America together with Chichen Itza as well as Machu pichu.

According to historians, the name Tikal was taken from the word, Ti-akal, a Mayan place name which implies “At the Reservoir.Variations in Roman spelling aside, the name could be a hybrid of the original Proto-Mayan word. The term, even so, refers to the several large and partly artificial water basins seen at the center of the ruins.

History:

As among the principal cultural plus population centers in Maya civilization Tikal’s enormous architecture dates to the 4th century BC, when it reached its height through the Classic Period ca. 200 AD to 900 AD. During which time, as reported by some sources, the site focused the Maya region politically. It’s debated as to if the Maya of the region been able to have a connection with indigenous population. Hieroglyphics present in Palenque and also Chichen Itza point out that there had been a combination of cultures between the Mixteca, Atzecs of Cental Mexico along with the Maya of Chiapas, generating diverse subcultures of an ancient pacifist, or non-sacrifice practicing civilization.

According to evidences, Teotihuacan conquered Tikal in the 4th century A.D.. Right after the end of the Late Classic Period, not any new primary monuments were made at Tikal and there’s evidence that elite palaces were destroyed. These occurrences were coupled with a slow decline in population and then followed by the site’s abandonment by the end of the 10th century.

Contrary to the its Mayan cousin, Gran Acropolis Ednza in Campeche, Mexico, Tikal had no water aside from what was obtained from rainwater and stored in underground storage facilities recognized as chultuns. During the last century, the ancient underground facilities were put to use to store water by archaeologists working in Tikal. The absence of rivers, springs and lakes in the primary vicinity of Tikal highlights a vast feat: constructing a huge city with merely supplies of kept periodic rainfall.

It was the intensive agricultural techniques that Tikal prospered, which are a lot more advanced than the slash & burn approaches formerly theorized by archeologists. Since Tikal only relied to seasonal rainfall, it was left to experience prolonged drought which was thought to lead to the major collapse of the Classic Maya.

Several other ideas indicate that Tikal was never a serious power in the Mayan world, but a subject of the empire civilization founded by El Caracol and Calakmul. As well as many other sources signify that Tikal was a predominant influence in the southern Maya. We all do know, on the other hand, that Tikal was quite often at war and inscriptions refer to alliances and struggle with many other Maya states, like UaxactunTikal Temple Caracol, and Calakmul.Caracol defeated Tikal at the end of the Early Classic Period; it was him who rose and took the place of Tikal being the paramount center in the southern Maya lowlands. It appears another defeat was experienced at the hands of Dos Pilas throughout the middle 7th century, with the possible capture and also sacrifice of Tikal’s ruler right at that moment.

Akin to the numerous archaeological sites in the Mayan World, just a fraction of the constructions in Tikal have been entirely excavated. With intense tourism in and out of Tikal virtually year-round and also poor funds excavations haven’t made important advances despite many years of archaeological work. Essentially the most dominant of the structures that have been excavated are Temples I – VI, each of which facilitates a temple structure on their summits. Most of these pyramids are more than 60 meters high (200 feet). They were numbered sequentially in the early survey of the site.

Plan A Vacation With Your Family

by Beth Willis

A lot of families avoid going on vacation simply because they can’t go through the stress of planning for them. But, if you follow a few basic rules, planning your vacation can actually be fun, and the whole family can get involved. Family vacations don’t have to be avoided for fear they will be stressful; with a little planning, you and your family can be off to the vacation of a lifetime.

First of all, try to figure out how much time you can take off work and school, and which time of year it will be possible to go. This type of assessment will allow you to decide how far your destination can be, and how much you need to prepare. For instance, if you can only take four days off you couldn’t fly from the US to Australia and back again but you might be able to go to Florida and enjoy the beach as a family.

What is your vacation budget?

You will also want to think about your budget. Once you know how much time you have, knowing how much you can spend can help you plan a good vacation. You may be able to spend three weeks away from home but if you can’t afford to fly to Europe and tour all around the continent than you need to make other plans. You need to be very honest where your budget is concerned so you can enjoy yourself while on your trip instead of worrying about money the whole time. If your budget is particularly small, there is nothing wrong in going to visit some nearby attraction which will be fun for the whole family.

Once you have your days and your finances worked out, you need to decide what type of activities will be good for the whole family. If your family is composed of only adults, an adventurous vacation can be fun. And if you have young children, theme parks, camping and beaches can be wonderful. You don’t have to spend a fortune on luxuries, but you do need to ensure your family vacation is fun for everyone and age appropriate. If you are not sure about your options, find something the youngest person in the family will enjoy, and everyone else can have fun around that.

Planning your vacation following this order will ensure that you are clear about several things before you make reservations. If you get the whole family involved in planning you might need to take votes or there may be need to be some executive decisions by parents, but overall this is a very straight forward way to plan a family vacation.

Beechworth Australia: Taste The Wines And Experience The Festivals

by Karl Larkins

Established in the North East of Victoria as part of the Indigo Shire in 1853, Beechworth Australia has a unique story to tell. This fascinating settlement is sunny, with a temperate climate well suited to viticulture, particularly on sloping terrain at 1200 yards above sea level. Grape vines thrive in granitic loam soils formed over gravel and clay.

With its starting point as a gold-producing town, as symbolized by its golden horseshoe logo, the area has re-invented itself as an agricultural destination.

The gold rush history of this place stays alive through relics that are kept in excellent condition. Even the hospitality industry has made use of these special structures, modifying old coaches to make guest rooms. Another successfully restored site is where hydraulic sluicing took place during the gold mining era at Lake Sambell.

Just to the north, the beautiful Woolshed Falls can be found. Around the town itself are a few dams that cater for recreational activities including fishing, swimming or picnics.

Beechworth is a popular tourist destination and residents take great pride in their town as seen by the first place achieved in the ‘Australian Tidy Towns’ Awards in 2009/2010 by its hard-working recipients. In addition, they won a prestigious award for litter prevention and an award for energy innovation.

Irrespective of how the area is explored, whether a mountain bike is used or on foot, the experience will be highly memorable, as its scenic beauty is inextricably interwoven with historic sites that are to be found all over.

Festivals are popular and draw people to the area to share the celebrations of historic events in the town’s history. One such festival is to remember the hearing that convicted the violent outlaw Ned Kelly, in 1880 during August. His hearing was held in Beechworth, hence the commemoration.

Each year the families of Chinese that came over during the rush for gold finding a home in the Ovens hold a Chinese festival to celebrate their cultural heritage. They quickly formed a China Town, which still exists today. Other festivals and functions founded on past historic events occur throughout the year and attract visitors with a taste for different types of experiences.

Visitors who enjoy the challenge of four-wheel driving tracks will find plenty of routes that they can explore, taking them through ghost villages, abandoned mining sites and forests. Tackling the drive to the top of Mt Stanley will result in views that are very rewarding.

Mountain bikers can enjoy spellbinding rides as they cycle the easily accessible Mountain Bike Parks which have the reputation of being virtually unrivalled in Australia. The walkers have many options, among which is the ‘Chiltern – Mt Pilot’ Park which contains the highest number of species of reptiles, birds and mammals of all Box-Ironbark sites.

Shopping in Beechwood Australia offers its own experience, as would a trip to the Burke Museum or an art gallery; while an evening spent enjoying some excellent local wines, before heading off on a ghost hunt, would round off a visit to this unusual destination with an abnormally wide range of fascinating things to experience.

These theme parks are perfect for every one in the family. Adults and kids will surely be in for a fully loaded fun fair with a budget that suits everyone’s wallets.

Their main highlights are not only the roller coaster rides. Total enchantment awaits the high spirited boys and girls where they can be scared out or be enthralled. The desire for thrills and adventure will not be spoiled unless the children are reluctant of going.

And just because these places are first intended for kids, it does not necessarily mean that the adults can never obtain the same level of excitement. In fact, these are also the most preferred spots for newly dating couples. And family bonding is surely a thing in places like these.

Much like any adventure causing places, safety must be the primary concern of the parents before having the kids taken to the parks. The greatest rides can also be the ones that pose great risks. Granting that parental guidance is vital, this is still never enough.

It is pretty prudent to corroborate with the operations of the parks on their safety. The government outlines specific standards, and people should verify if they are adhere earnestly to those.

There should be a guarantee of an accident free operation. After all, winning the trust of people is a primary intention of any operators. And this particular aspect is vital.

Crabtree Amusements can surely assure their patrons to get every ride they need. However, it is still best to check the quality of these rides before hopping in. This is just paramount for the day not to be spoiled at the end.

Are You Going To Be Happier With A Guided Tour Or With A Luxury Travel Vacation Package?

by Alice Nance

So, you have decided to book a luxury vacation. It is time to call your travel agent. And of course, the travel agent will ask you if you are more interested in a cruise, a tour, or a travel package. You know that cruises are not for you, but what about a tour? And, most importantly, what difference is there between a tour and a travel package? Since both of them offer different advantages, one must be familiar with what those differences are in order to make the right decision.

Understand the different definitions

When you are considering booking a tour for your luxury travel vacation, keep in mind that “tour” implies several things. First of all, a tour is usually guided, and consists of a group of other tourists. A vacation package, instead, is considered a full package which includes your flights, hotels and rental cars. You can add or subtract guided tours in your vacation package.

What is your vacation budget?

A tour is usually a really good deal. You get to stay in the nicer hotels of the areas, and in most situations, it is usually more than one hotel. Transportation is normally included, both to and from the airport, and to and from sights. The package also includes entry fees to different attractions you will be visiting. You can even add more attractions and tours to your package. Some packages also include some of the meals. If you choose a luxury travel vacation packages, only your air, hotels and cars are included. Sometimes there are special availability of free breakfasts of a city tour, but this is not the norm.

What Do You Prefer?

So, should you choose a tour or a vacation package? That really depends on the destination and your personal preferences. If you travel to places like Rome or Paris, and you want to see all the different attractions, then you are better off with a guided tour which will also include all your entry fees. But if you wish to visit these cities to simply bask in the incredible ambience, and you don’t have an interest in touring the “big attractions”, then a luxury travel vacation package is for you. You would not want a guided tour of Jamaica or Hawaii. Your main goal is probably to relax. The best way to decide is to figure out what you will want to do while you are there.

Now that you know what each package offers, it is up to you to choose. Both options offer different perks. The both offer interesting things, and of course, the pricing is different. So, it really depends on what you want and where you are going. Chances are your travel agent can steer towards the best choice for your travel needs, but now you know why and you can make the decision for yourself.
