The extended family is as important as the nuclear family since it provides a sense of stability. Mexicans are very aware of how each individual fits into each hierarchy be it family, friends or business.

Hierarchical Society

Mexican society and business is very hierarchical. Both are vertically structured and highly stratified. This aspect of society extends into the home as well. The population typically respects the roles of authority and considers important in providing guidance and in decision making. Rank, position and standing are important as well.

Rank is important, and those above your station are always treated with respect. While some may argue that this invariably leads to an authoritarian aspect to their society, it is important for Mexican society to know who is in charge. Those who are native to the Hawaiian islands, as in they are descended from a tribe, are to be referred to as Hawaiians. Caucasians, Asians, Europeans and any other groups not descended from a Hawaiian tribe but live in Hawaii are referred to as ‘locals of Hawaii’ or ‘from Hawaii’. It is considered rude among native Hawaiians to refer to anyone who lives on the islands as Hawaiians as they are not descended from a Hawaiian tribe. The population of Hawaii is made up of many ethnicities, but primarily of Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese and Caucasian descent. The Hawaiian people refer to Caucasians as ‘haole’, a word that began as meaning foreigner but has since come to mean simple ‘white’. The large Portuguese population is often called haole and they take offense to it as they do not see themselves as Caucasian.

Native Hawaiians speak a bastardized form of English called pidgin, as well as Standard English. The accent, vocabulary and use of pidgin varies by region and contains influences from the Japanese, Hawaiian and Filipino languages. As a visitor to Hawaii, do not attempt to speak pidgin. It is rude, just as mimicking the regional accent of someone from the southern states or England.
