Harris Tweed and the Isle of Harris

by Angus Macleod

Scotland is only a small country in the United Kingdom of Great Britain. For much of it’s history the nation and it’s people have been incredibly poor but from this impoverished society some of the most influential people came forth to make their mark upon our world. There are few countries in the world that have not been directly influenced by the hands of the Scottish but few consider this when asked to think of Scotland and most of us would rather bring to mind the likes of Tartan and Harris Tweed.

Strangely much of what we consider to be traditionally Scottish, such as Harris Tweed and tartan is something of a Victorian invention created by the likes of Sir Walter Scott. Scott wrote incredible novels which romanticized Scotland and went to great lengths to introduce the British Royal Family to the country they ruled. Queen Victoria fell in love with Scotland and spent much of her life at Balmoral. Throughout her rule new tartan patterns were developed and much of the traditional Scotland we know today grew from this time.

It could be said that Sir Walter Scott and Queen Victoria created the Scottish tourism industry. Although there had been earlier visitors to Scotland they were few and far between as the country was remote and communication links were poor. Throughout the Victorian period interest in Scotland grew and, with the advent of railway systems, Scotland became the playground of the upper classes who indulged in hunting, fishing and golf.

While a small number of visitors ventured as far as the Outer Hebrides the majority wore Harris Tweed. Harris Tweed, produced only on the Isle of Harris (and Lewis) is a hard wearing and durable cloth of somber colors which was ideally suited for use in clothing for the Victorian and Edwardian upper class visitors. In 1844 the Earl of Dunmore had asked the weavers of Harris to create a cloth in a similar style to the Murray Tartan. Much encouraged by Lady Dunmore the cloth was made in various styles and quickly became popular.

Harris Tweed is heavily protected, it can only be produced in the Outer Hebrides and the methods used to make it have changed little over the centuries. The cloth is hand made and was used local wool, colored using dyes made from locally occurring plants. The cloth was incredibly tough and it was a long time before other products from abroad encroached into it’s markets however the industry eventually decreased.

In recent years there has been renewed interest in this unique material. It has, at various times, made appearances on the catwalks of the world’s fashion centers and many still prefer it over other materials. It is still common to see men dressed in a Harris Tweed jacket but use of the material has, most recently, been much more diverse. Not too long ago Nike made a very large order for the material and produced a pair of shoes using it which proved very successful, even though they were often difficult to find.

The Isle of Harris has, for many years now, seen an incredible increase in the number of visitors which continues to grow each year. In fact tourism now accounts for a major part of the Hebrides economy and it vital to the future of these unique islands. However the Harris Tweed industry has, very recently, hit something of a crisis point as the main mill has closed. Though the local Council and other bodies will be working hard to find a solution the future of this important industry is in a state of flux.

People visit the Isle of Harris and the Outer Hebrides for a great many reasons. Some visit to trace their family roots, others to indulge in sports, some to enjoy the Gaelic culture, some to study the flora and fauna, or the many archaeological sites but most of all people visit to take in the spectacular countryside. Getting to the Isle of Harris is something of a journey by car with the last leg of the trip being a short ferry crossing. However you can get there quickly via regular flights arriving on the adjoining Isle of Lewis.

Beyond Tourist Traps in San Diego

by Thomas Burtonelli

Having lived in San Diego for much of my life, I find it amazing that many visitors stick to just the Zoo and beaches. My friends, there is so much more to do. In fact, here are some attractions for families and single adults alike.

The World Famous San Diego Zoo can make the garish claim for a good reason. It is pretty amazing. Snuggled five minutes from downtown San Diego in the middle of Balboa Park, the zoo is a collection of beautiful space and animals.

Now for something completely different. You haven’t lived until you’ve gone grunion hunting. Grunion are little fish that come up on the beach to breed in the middle of the night during full moons. You chase them. Adult beverages are recommended.

San Diego has the Padres. They’re a professional baseball team. They’re not very good, but it really doesn’t matter. San Diego has a new baseball stadium that is amazing. Petco Park. You can even bring a dog while catching a game.

Balboa Park is an excellent area for spending a day. You can just kick back and people watch or you can take in the various museums in the park. They range from historical to space museums. If all else fails, the zoo is also there.

Given its location, you probably will not find it surprising San Diego is known for its Mexican food. Everyone has their favorite place, but some of the best are in Eden Gardens within Solana Beach. Authentic and inexpensive. Give it a try.

Looking to do a bit of dancing. From the Tango to line dancing to whatever is hot, one needs look no farther than downtown San Diego. Head over to E street and prepare to burn off dinner with some seriously fun gyrating.

Ever wondered what a yard of beer tastes like? Well, now you can find out. Head over to O’Hungry in Old Town. They serve beer by the yard. It comes in a long glass with a bulb on the end. At least, I faintly remember that being the case. Don’t Drive!

This represents only a tiny list of the many things you can do in San Diego. I’ve lived here for 30 plus years and still find new things to do. People are friendly. The place is beautiful and fun is available at just about every turn. See you soon, dude!

Forget the Beach: Try an Alaska Adventure

by Johnathan Bakers

If you are seeking some raw, natural beauty, you should definitely consider an Alaska outdoor vacation where you can enjoy some of its popular attractions such as glaciers, wildlife and unspoiled waters. Since Alaska is about the ?great outdoors,? you surely cannot visit the area without including some fun outdoor activities to your itinerary.

One of the best features of an outdoor adventure trip to Alaska is that exposure to the beautiful state is varied, offering something for everything. Those that are not that physically active can still enjoy the state?s beauty and even enjoy some of the more mild adventure activities. Such activities might include a day charter on a boat or plane to see the local wildlife. You could very easily see mating seals, moose, polar bears or even humpback whales, among so many other fascinating animals. Other mild activities include a visit to see glaciers or a historic gold mining town. For those up to it, you could also try out a day hike through the area.

Alaska also offers activities for the traveler seeking more wild adventure opportunities. Take a break from the mundane sightseeing and try kayaking off the beautiful Alaskan coast or white water rafting in the rapids. Or, try ice climbing on a glacier or backpacking in one of the state?s beautiful parks. The Denali National Park is a must-see. With so much adventure and fun, you surely will not miss the beach while immersed in the glory and fun of your Alaska outdoor adventure.

Though the weather doesn’t match that of weather in alicante spain, Alaska cruises are a popular choice for many traveling to this untamed land for the first time. Cruises suffice both the adventure seekers and those in it for the sightseeing. If a fishing excursion does not sound intriguing, then you may rather enjoy a tour of an old, historic ghost town. Regardless of what you choose, doing what you enjoy is a lot of the fun in planning your Alaska adventure travel.

If you are traveling with a combination of personalities, it is best to have one base or ?travel headquarters? to suit everyone in the travel party. The best option would be one that can meet the needs of those preferring sightseeing tours as well as those seeking high energy, more adrenaline rushing outdoor activities.

The actual travel to Alaska can be an adventure itself and should also be considered. Cruises can depart from a port nearest to your home, allowing the ship to serve as the ?travel headquarters? for your travel party. Or, if you fly into Alaska you will need to rent a car or take a tax to your hotel or accommodations serving as a central spot.

A ravel agent can recommend the best travel arrangements for you, depending on your travel party, home location and budget. They can also help if something goes wrong, such as a delayed flight or hotel reservation problems. They can handle the unanticipated issue on your behalf and do so more efficiently than you could. Anyway, you?re the one on vacation!

Make Your Air Travel Easier: Know the Luggage Rules

by Pat Lowe

These days, airline travel is more complicated than ever. There are new size restrictions, new security requirements, and new rules about what may or may not be allowed in your carry on luggage. Although these rules can often seem like a pain, the restrictions and regulations are in place to protect travelers.

Keep Abreast of the Changes

At times it seems that the rules change nearly every week. It’s easy to be confused about the new carry on luggage rules. However, showing up at the airport with no clue about the rules is no excuse not to follow them. The best way to avoid any troubles with your luggage at the airport is to be informed of the carry on luggage rules well in advance of your trip.

The website of the airline you are traveling with is a great way to find out all of the up to date rules about hand or carry on luggage and even though airports in America all have the same body of rules, some are interpreted in a different way to others.

International flight rules for carry on luggage can be even more complicated than domestic flights. Security is much stricter and you will, of course, be subject to the rules and regulations of your destination country. This works in the same way when you are leaving that country and setting off on your journey home. You will need to be aware of the departing rules and regulations.

Some carry on luggage rules are more like a request than a rule. For example, airlines request that you bring the smallest piece of carry on luggage that is necessary, but you are allowed to have a carry on piece up to the largest allowable size.

Likewise, the Transportation Security Administration recommends that you pack all electronic items in your checked luggage, but you are still allowed to take them in your carry on luggage.

Avoid the Headache

We have all seen the passenger who refuses to comply with the carry on luggage rules and tries to bring a larger bag or refuses to put something in their checked luggage. Avoid being that person by educating yourself about the carry on luggage rules before you get to the airport. Also remember that the airline and TSA personnel are only doing their jobs; arguing with them won’t get them to change their minds.

Your journey will be easier, quicker and safer all round if you take a few simple steps to keep abreast of carry on luggage rules and regulations.

From Oregon to DC: Bed and Breakfasts for the Booklover

by Jane Leisteiner

Perhaps Mark Twain or F. Scott Fitzgerald once stayed there or perhaps it is a home with a library stacked floor-to-ceiling with novels and great volumes. There is something about bed and breakfasts that appeals to booklovers of all kinds, whether it be the historical charm of a restored inn or the peaceful serenity of finding a good place to simply sit and enjoy a good, long read. Here are some bed and breakfasts that especially appeal to anyone with a passion for all things literary.

Read, relax at Alexander House Booklovers’ Bed and Breakfast

Nestled in the historic district of a quaint Eastern Shore village between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, this bed and breakfast is a celebration of books and writers. Guests can relax by the fire and enjoy a good read in the Mark Twain Parlor and Library (with a diverse selection of books). Each room realistically reflects the life and times of a beloved author. Revel in the romance of Regency England in the elegant, yet sexy, Jane Austen; Immerse yourself in the jazzy Art Deco Harlem Renaissance of the Langston Hughes Room; or dream of pirates and treasures in the nautical Robert Louis Stevenson Room. The whimsically French Caf? Colette contains a collection of 34 cats in pictures and collectibles, in honor of Colette’s love of felines.

The Book and Blanket Inn Caters to Readers

This Adirondack Mountains inn served as the town’s post office for many years and also as a barracks for state troopers. Thankfully, it is now a restful bed & breakfast catering to the literary set. It offers three spacious guest rooms: the Regency inspired Jane Austen room, the sophisticated F. Scott Fitzgerald Room and the rustic Jack London Room. There’s also a library and James Thurber nook (Thurber wrote one of his short stories on a stay in town), a large porch–complete with swing, and a friendly basset hound on the premises. But most of all there are books – in every room. Many of the books may be borrowed by guests “indefinitely” and guests are encouraged to leave a book for the next booklover.

Akwaaba Bed and Breakfast – Washington, D.C.

Located in a restored 19th century Victorian rowhouse, The Akwaaba Bed and Breakfast, is charming inside and out. The rooms are stunning, each individually decorated with its own theme. The Zora Neale Hurston room includes a brass king bed, antique writing secretary desk, bay window with a view of 16th street and a guest bath with a two-person Jacuzzi tub. The Inspiration Room is another memorable room featuring an ensuite clawfoot soaking tub. The opulent Writer’s Suite is its own little apartment featuring a galley kitchen, and main room that serves both as a living room and bed room.

Oregon’s Sea Coast Perfect for Booklovers

Perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean and a pristine beach, this historic hotel is an homage to all things literary. Named after Sylvia Beach, a patron of literature during the ’20s and ’30s in Paris, it offers twenty rooms celebrating such authors as Dr. Seuss, Agatha Christie, Tennessee Williams, Alice Walker, Hemingway, Shakespeare, Tolkien and our favorite–The Edgar Allan Poe Room, with black walls, a stuffed raven and an imitation pendulum axe over the bed (pleasant dreams?). The oceanfront attic library, contains comfortable chairs and sofa, a fireplace, and of course, lots of books. Enjoy the roar of the sea while enjoying one. The inn’s Tables of Content restaurant overlooks the ocean and serves up gourmet breakfasts and dinners.

Concord’s Hawthorne Inn Beckons to Booklovers

The Hawthorne Inn is surrounded by great literary history. The historic Concord, Mass., inn rests on land once owned by its namesake Nathanial Hawthorne. He lived in the house directly across the street, and the inn’s next door neighbor was once home to Louisa May Alcott and Margaret Sydney who wrote The Five Little Peppers children’s books. Several of the guest rooms are named in honor of authors and their works, such as the Sleepy Hollow or Alcott rooms. The inn, which has been named on of New England’s best, is decorated with antiques in period style. Concord is practically bursting at the seams with interesting attractions, from visiting one of the Revolutionary War’s first battlefields to touring historic homes to enjoying outdoor activities. In addition, it’s just a short drive from Boston, yet comfortably away from the bustle of the city.

Save on Subsequent Rentals by Joining a Loyalty Program

by Johnathan Bakers

Are you researching car rental rates and specials? There are a number of specials and gimmicks advertised on T.V. and the internet. The market is very competitive and some gimmicks are downright ridiculous. It?s best to find the lowest rate with the most perks. Here are some tips to searching for cheap car rentals from reputable companies.

What?s In a Name?

There are many nationwide car rental companies known in the travel industry such as Avis, Hertz and National. Some have names that imply they are less expensive than the others such as Payless, Dollar and Budget Rent A Car. These companies target a budget minded customer but they are not always the cheapest. Many times other car rental companies have the same or lower rates. It?s best to search all available car rental companies regardless of their marketing scheme.

Email Alerts

Many car rental companies reserve the best deals for customers who book directly through them. Visit the company?s website to view specials and virtual coupons. You should also sign up for email alerts. The rental company will send you an email when they have a special offer. They may also send you coupons that can save you money or entitle you to a free rental day or free upgrade.

Loyalty Programs

It?s also a good idea to sign up for a rental car company?s loyalty program, especially if you?ll be renting frequently in the future. Not only will you receive email alerts for promotions but you?ll also get special discounts that only loyalty program members are entitled. After you?ve rented a few times, you will receive perks on subsequent rentals such as free upgrades and free options such as GPS. You?ll also be able to take advantage of special lines for VIP customers for fast car pickup and drop off. These will be beneficial whether driving across the US or Spain.

Small Car Rental Companies

The large rental chains have the most loyal customers and have a large number of locations and variety of vehicles but they don?t always offer the best rest. Many times small rental offices have better rates. You?ll have to weigh the price benefit with the other downsides. They usually aren?t located right at the airport, their car selection is poor and not guaranteed and their service can be lacking. Smaller companies also don?t usually have a loyalty program which may not matter if you don?t intend on renting frequently.

Also take a good look at the contract. Most of the large car rental chains include standard services such as roadside assistance with the rental price. If you?re renting from a small company then ask if they offer the service for a fee.

Whether you choose a large chain or small ?mom and pop? rental car company, carefully look over the contract and the estimated total price before signing. There are always hidden costs that you need to be aware of before driving away.

The Green Coffee Bean

by Kevin Foulds

Coffee does not exist in nature in the form that we normally buy it. Coffee is prepared from the roasted seeds of the coffee plant. These seeds are commonly known as ‘Green Coffee Beans,’ even though they are not precisely beans, they are more like a berry. The ‘green coffee beans’ that are collected from the coffee plantations are sent to places where they are first roasted, and then ground, and finely crushed to make coffee powder.

First, the green coffee bean must be picked from plantations. The coffee beans are most frequently picked by hand by labourers who get paid by the basketful. Since coffee beans are a type of drupe, with fruit flesh directly wrapping the coffee bean, after being gathered the flesh of the coffee bean must be promptly removed by soaking, scouring and mechanically rubbing the bean. The de-fruited coffee bean is then cleansed with water to remove sticking fruit and additional sugars before drying. The green coffee beans are then spread over a large concrete or rock plane, where they are dried by air and sunlight.

Coffee beans are given a grade. This is done by color and size. Discolored, decayed and damaged beans are removed.

The process of going from the coffee berry to the dry green coffee bean can be relatively long and may even involve some fermentation.Once this has been completed the green coffee beans should be stored in a container. The container will allow it to breathe and not impart another flavor to the beans: burlap bags, paper bags, etc. This is for obvious reasons. Plastic containers are never used when storing coffee beans for obvious reasons. They are stored at room temperature and out of direct light. They may be kept for a long period of time and are relatively easy to ship abroad.

Polyphenols are found in green coffee beans. They act to help reduce free oxygen radicals in the body. The bean extract is sometimes standardized to more than 50% chlorogenic acid .

Coffee is now a major force in continental countries. It is loved by millions, and is the morning choice for those going to work to start the day. The green coffee bean is the start of the production line. There are many ways to produce the coffee, and depending what you do with the green coffee bean and where it comes from will determine the taste and the outcome of the coffee.

The Roasting Process. Depending on how log the coffee beans are exposed to the sun will depend on what the flavour or strength will be. The bean contains a wide variety of chemical compounds including proteins, fats, sugars, dextrin, cellulose, caffeine, and organic acids.

Some of these compounds volatise, oxidize, or decompose as part of the roasting process. The roasting process is very important in producing an aromatic cup of coffee. When roasted, the green coffee bean expands to nearly twice its initial size, changing in color and density.

At some time during the roasting process, the coffee beans will start cracking, quite like popping popcorn. The beans expel moisture, and, upon reaching 400 degrees Fahrenheit, the color changes to yellow and then to a light ‘cinnamon’ brown, and oil is released from its interior.

This oil gives coffee its distinct flavor. The greater the amount of oil released, the stronger the flavor. The coffee beans will crack during the roasting process, this gives the experienced roaster a guide as to how to gauge the progression of the roast. The bean will then continue to expel more oil while darkening its color, until such time it is removed from the heat. The final product can be crushed into savory coffee powder.

Papua New Guinea is just one region that grows the coffee berry. This is mainly grown in the Highland regions rich volcanic soils between the altitudes of 4,000 and 6,000 feet above sea level. Every region has its own distinctive taste. Either by height, soil, sunlight and other varying factors to make coffee unique to that erea. It is believed that every factor that comes into play has a bearing on the outcome of the coffee bean. All contribute to the production.

Papua New Guinea coffee is well regarded by consumers for its uniqueness, consistency and special flavor characteristics. They export approximately 2% of the annual world green bean production.

Papua New Guinea coffee beans are highly sought, as they produce a distinct floral and citric flavor and nutty body, and are frequently used to blend with other coffees to produce unique gourmet coffees. Take a look at this website which specialises in the green coffee bean from Papa New Guinea. Visit Coffee Pacifica.

Brazil – continues to be the largest coffee exporter, although the green coffee market has recently been flooded with large amount of Robusta beans from Vietnam. Robusta coffees, which were traded in London at a cheaper price compared to New York’s Arabica, are the choice of large industrial clients consisting of multinational roasters and instant coffee producers; they favor these coffees because of the less expensive price. A rare and costly variety of Robusta is the Indonesian Kopi Luwak and the Philippine Kape Alamid. Owing to the indirect pressure exerted by the World Bank to the French government, experts believe that the influx of cheap green coffee resulted from the crisis in pricing that started in 2001, and continues to the present.

Robusta is the cheaper coffee bean. It packs lots of caffeine jolt, but offers only one-dimensional, front-of-mouth flavour. Much of it goes for instant, but a surprising amount becomes the filler in blends. Most industrial espresso roasters say it gives a better crema, or head, but this is rot – robusta is just a way to keep costs down and drinkers’ nerves jangled.

Arabica beans have finer, more complex flavours and are less highly-caffeinated. As with wine grapes, they include many sub-varieties and variations in terroir, and different skills in picking, de-fruiting, drying, sorting, ageing, roasting and packing the beans offer a coffee lover endless opportunities for subtlety and surprise. I haven’t found an instant coffee I like, so won’t be mentioning one, though I did visit one factory where the process for making it was ugly: de-caffeinated was achieved by adding a chemical solvent, the extracted caffeine then presenting itself as a phlegm sludge.

Where To Go For A Coffee In London. Most people visit a Starbucks or a Costa Coffee for a decent coffee when they are out and about. At 2.25 for a normal cup this is no longer good value for money, and you dont get the feel of having that decent cup of coffee that you longed for.

If you are in Central London then I would recommend a visit to Connaught Square, commonly known as ‘Connaught Village’ just off the Edgware Road. It is a 2 minute walk from Marble Arch tube station, and 200 metres from the bottom end of Hyde Park. There is a small coffee shop on the corner of Connaught Square called Markus Coffee. It has recently been refurbished by the owner, who has been blending and producing his magnificent coffee for over 25 years. Roasting takes place every day and the fresh aromatic smell is amazing. It is the best coffee in London. Well worth a visit.
