Pack Well for Travel

by Trudie Simpson-

Your longed for holiday has finally arrived. Are you well prepared for your trip? Often in the excitement leading up to departure essential luggage items can be over looked. Obviously a weekend away is different from an overseas trip so you must pack accordingly.

Once you have your list then add the following. The three essentials are, Toiletries, travel documents and First Aid.

You may think that there is no point to packing these extra items. Take a moment to think about it. The time it would take out of your precious holiday to find a pharmacy at 2am for a headache tablet. Trying to explain diarrhea to a pharmacist that does not speak your language?

First Aid kits are now being produced to cover any type of travel. They come in neat compact kits for all budgets. They are useful to keep at home or in the car.Whatever type of travel you are doing there will be a kit to suit or you can put your own together.

A decent kit will contain pain relief medication; stomach upset medication, an antiseptic cream, various band aids and plasters. Usually safety pins and tweezers will be included. Eye drops are good. Include an emergency temporary dental filling as well. Make sure that your first aid kit is in your checked luggage. This will ensure none of your essential items will be confiscated by customs.

Don’t forget to pack your razor. After this you need tissues, toothpicks or floss, insect repellent and sun cream should be considered. If the climate is cold or dry pack good lip balm and body lotion. To save the annoyance of broken nails always pack and emery board or two. Medicated wipes can be very handy for a quick clean up or hand wash where not water is available.

If you are on medication make sure you have enough for your whole trip and then some. Don’t assume that your destination country pharmacy will stock your brand of medicine or that you will be able to get your prescription filled over seas.

If traveling alone try to have emergency contact information on you at all times. Copies of your passport, travel ordinary and travel insurance documents should travel with you. Carry these document separate from the originals.

Planning your luggage well to include these essentials is priceless. Just a few extra items can make a huge difference to your holiday enjoyment. Bon Voyage!

Bare necessities for your Alaska Cruise

by Craig Wilson

So you have booked a Cruise to Alaska, there are some common sense items you should make sure you take with you and some things you are best to do to make sure you make the most of your voyage to Alaska. Simply by planning ahead you can be relaxed knowing you have everything you need to enjoy your vacation.

When you book your cruise it is always a good idea to get your travel insurance at the same time, this insurance will offer you different types of protection. Most people book a cruise well in advance of their departure date and should you need to cancel having booked so early the travel protection cover should cover most eventualities. So in the event of an illness, major injury to yourself or anyone traveling with you should be covered.

Travel Protection Insurance not only covers cancellation but also whilst you are on your cruise in Alaska. Insurance cover should cover your medical bills in the event of serious injury or illness of anyone named on the policy. The holiday insurance should also cover your luggage and personal belongings in the even of theft. Make sure the insurance cover you have is adequate for your needs and everyone named on it is also fully covered as well.

Don’t forget to take some form of identification and carring it with you at all times. Suitable identification would be a passport or a notarized copy of a birth certificate with some photographic identification. Alaska is an American state however there is a chance your cruise may leave from Canada or make a stop there. For other travelers you will already have a passport, which you used to gain entry to the United States or Canada.

Make sure you take the appropriate clothing for the formal evenings aboard the ship and casual but smart attire for the other nights. Don’t forget to pack your swimwear for the pool or Jacuzzi.

Don’t forget you are traveling to Alaska and pack appropriate clothing for the weather for the time of year you are traveling on your cruise. By layering your clothes you can be comfortable and warm at the same time. If you have hiking boots, make sure you take them if you are planning on taking some of the more adventurous excursions.

When it comes to shampoo and soap some cruise ships are no different to hotels and only provide small bars of soap and small bottles of basic shampoo. Make sure you pack soap and shampoo with your other items such as lotions and toothpaste. Take similar items you would if you were going on an extended vacation.

Take extra spending money for emergencies or if you want to dime out whilst in a port of call or for shopping. Don’t take large amounts of cash it is advisable to take travelers cheques as these can be replaced, cash can’t. Credit cards are widely accepted in Alaska.

Top Attractions To See While In New York

by JW Raymond

If you are fortunate enough to have seven days in New York City, you will find this just enough time to see the most popular visitor attractions. Most people will agree that a trip here would not be complete without seeing the world famous empire State Building especially from the top. Some people swear that it is better to visit the top floor of the Rockefeller Center but you really do need a clear day to fully appreciate the view. Possibly equal to The State Building is The Statue of Liberty but owing to delays with the ferry trips it might be worth viewing this ‘beautiful lady’ (and an inspiration to many) from Ellis Island.

Fortunately, the Staten Island ferry is still free and can provide great views of the Statue of Liberty; dropping off at the terminal is the best place because it is where there are some good street artists. Of course almost everyone who spends seven days in New York City will, at some pint, make their way to the site of where the Twin Towers once stood. The area where they stood is surprisingly large plus the emptiness feels strange and if you like taking photographs, you may be disappointed here because it just doesn’t feel right. World famous stores are plentiful in New York with names like Tiffany’s to the many discount stores along Broadway.

Bloomingdales is another famous store (for the wealthy) to look around but it is Maceys, who will give 11 percent discount on production of a tourist card where most people will head for. At the time of writing the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum was closed for refurbishment but should be open by the fall of 2008; once the refurbishment is complete it will be worth visiting when it re-opens. Many special (and large) craft are located here including a number from World War II, namely the aircraft carrier the USS Intrepid. The New York City Police Museum is worth an hour if you’re down that way; it’s free to enter but a five dollar donation is recommended to help with its upkeep; because it’s about New York’s finest (and some not so fine), it has some really excellent NYPD souvenirs.

After that why not visit the Lower East Side Tenement Museum as it’s a time capsule of migrant New York built in 1864 and was a grim home for waves of immigrants; it’s what made America great (and appalling for a time). For a step back in time it worth going to Central Park where the New York Museum is located; this is an exhibition of many periods relating to the life of The Big Apple.

There is a huge amount to see and do in this city and if you are staying anything less than seven days in New York, you will hardly scratch the surface!

Resort and boutique hotel trends

by Robert Aiemens

Did you know that there are different types of hotels to choose from when taking a break? For one thing you could check out the latest boutique hotel trends. You actually have a choice of different hotel suites to enjoy. Conventional hotel advertising has brainwashed many people into a perception of what a hotel should look and feel like.

Right, so you can choose to stay in an inn such as The Holladay house which you can find in Virginia. Or perhaps you would like to stay at a well known brand chain hotel. But there is another type of hotel hovering just below the radar. If you want something that has the relaxed atmosphere of a homely bed and breakfast, and the amenities of a big hotel, then you could choose a stay at a boutique hotel.

Boutique hotels have had mixed fortunes since the emergence of affordable hotel accomodation. What has helped them remain popular is the homely atmosphere. Quite often the buildings are historic, and this gives them an elevated air of gravitas. Boutiques strive for individuality, and are usually designed around a theme. You will see a lot of local fashion and culture references, with art and local hand crafts on display. Colour schemes and decor have usually been designed to compliment the building and theme and reflect boutique hotel resort trends.

Boutique hotel owners will use their surroundings to come up with a theme fo the hotel. For example, the city of Santa Fe has a boutique hotel that uses the southwest culture of the Native Americans. The hotel, called the Anasazi Inn, uses handmade throws, rugs and pottery.

Other hotels choose to base their theme around a time in history. New Orleans hotels are based around the 19th Century. Over in San Francisco’s Hotel Union Square, it is decorated according to the Prohibition era. You will find black granite, cream and travertine tiles.

You won’t just find these hotels in the United States. Such is the level of service and style provided by boutique hotel owners, their popularity is immense. Boutique hotels can be found in Paris, Tokyo, Seville and even Russia. You can even get funding to start a hotel from specialized boutique hotel lenders.

The average hotel sise has 25-50 rooms. You will also find some boutique hotels with 8-10 rooms, with others having over 100 rooms. The smaller sizes of these hotels allow the employees to focus a lot more on customer services, and personalizing their guests stay.

You should attempt to book early if you want to reserve a room. Rooms are already limited to begin with, so get on the internet early. Leave it too late and your first choice of hotel is bound to be gone. Out of peak season you should check up at least a month in advance. Be wary of any big hotel conferences coming up, especially in San diego. They can book a city out fast.

A part of the charm that boutique hotels have that measure up and go beyond chain hotels, is the fact that many of these hotels are upgrading their rooms. Many of the rooms, including deluxe and standard, have some type of high-speed Internet access and private baths. Some boutique hotels, especially larger ones, will offer the business guests use of the meeting room. Larger boutique hotels usually have a spa, fitness center and even a swimming pool. They will also have restaurants and bars inside of their hotels for guests to enjoy.

Why not choose a boutique hotel when on business or vacation? After all you’ve probably had the same experience each time you’ve stayed at a chain hotel. The higher price is definetely worth it. The quality of service and hotel quality is extremely appealing. if you want something more than the bog standard, boutique hotels will provide that and much more.

by Leroy Calstard

How to Travel With Children and Enjoy

You may find yourself rethinking the idea of traveling with children, but you will find plenty of ways to keep it stress-free, as long as, you learn how to plan a vacation well. You will want to take the following tips inconsideration so that you can have a great family vacation.

The first thing that you will want to do is include your kids in the planning. Ask them to get involved in the planning process and you will find their excitement will build. Although children sometimes have a limited amount of attention and tend to get tuckered out quickly, you can plan a lot of simple and exciting activities for the whole family to take part in.

You will also want to think about the things that you bring on the trip as well. You will want to bring plenty of things that you will need like disposable diapers, but you will also find that you can rent a lot of the furniture needed for the baby like a stroller or crib. You will want to make sure that you bring your medication for the children and also be prepared for anything by bringing a first-aid kit. You will also need to ask how you can sterilize or prepare the bottles at the hotel too.

Keep in mind that the key is to keep them busy whether on a long car ride or a cheap flight to Murcia. You will want to make sure that the trip is very enjoyable for the entire family, but you will also want to make the children feel comfortable. If that means that you bring their favorite videos or CD’s, well then you will just need to bring them. Keeping the children happy and busy will make a great vacation even better.

Also, make sure that you think about the children’s safety on the road. This is very important and you will want to make sure that you take all the precautions to keep your children safe. These means that you will need to drive slowly, safely, and on the defense so that you can protect your children as much as possible.

Also, you need to think about ailments like motion sickness and traveler’s diarrhea. You will find that motion sickness is something that everyone gets every now and then, but you will want to make sure that you take plenty of stops with the children. You will also want to give them time to process a heavy meal before throwing them into the car, because it could cause sickness. You will also want to protect your children from the water. You need to make sure that you have plenty of distilled water and you stay away from the foods that are purchased from the local markets because you could become very sick from the food and water that is local. Always ask for bottled!
